Commercialization
The process of turning funded research or a prototype into a product, service, or operational capability that customers actually buy or deploy.
What is Commercialization?
In government innovation programs, commercialization includes both commercial market adoption and government transition. A startup can commercialize by selling to private-sector customers, winning Phase III government work, licensing technology, or partnering with a prime contractor.
Strong commercialization plans explain who needs the technology, why now, what budget or market will pay for it, and what milestones convert a prototype into fielded capability. Weak plans simply say the market is large.
