What is the difference between SBIR and STTR?
SBIR funds small businesses directly for R&D. STTR requires a formal partnership with a nonprofit research institution (like a university). STTR is ideal for companies that need academic research expertise.
How much funding can I get through SBIR?
Phase I awards range from $50K to $275K for proof of concept (6-12 months). Phase II awards range from $500K to $1.8M for development (24 months). In 2026, Congress also created strategic breakthrough awards up to $30M.
Do I have to pay back SBIR funding?
No. SBIR awards are non-dilutive, meaning you do not give up equity and you do not repay the funding. It is a grant, not a loan or investment.
