DUNS Number
Data Universal Numbering System Number
A nine-digit identifier formerly required for federal contracting, now replaced by the SAM.gov-issued Unique Entity Identifier (UEI) as of April 2022.
What is DUNS Number?
The DUNS number was a proprietary identifier issued by Dun & Bradstreet (D&B) that served as the primary entity identifier for federal awards for over two decades. As of April 4, 2022, the federal government transitioned to the Unique Entity Identifier (UEI), which is generated and managed by SAM.gov.
If your organization previously had a DUNS number, your records were automatically migrated to the UEI system during the transition. New registrants no longer need to obtain a DUNS number — SAM.gov handles everything directly.
While DUNS numbers are no longer required for federal contracting, Dun & Bradstreet still issues D-U-N-S numbers for commercial credit reporting and business identity purposes. Some prime contractors and international procurement processes may still reference them.
